# Transcript Editor

> The in-browser editor opens only on jobs set up to use it — how to tell, and what to do on every other job.

Legalancer has an in-browser transcript editor, but it isn't a platform-wide mode — it's a setting on the individual job. A job opens in the editor only if the agency set that job up to use it. Almost none are: the control that turns it on isn't rendered on any staff form today, so no new job can be created with it.

In practice this means the job in front of you is almost certainly a download-and-upload job: pull the media and any starting draft from the job, work in your own software, and upload the finished document. That whole path is covered in [Managing Jobs](/team-adF2334soP/transcription/manage) and [Submit Your Transcript](/team-adF2334soP/transcription/submit).

## How to tell which kind of job you have

Look at the button on the row in your Active list, or the header of the job page, while it's your turn.

An Options menu means the normal path — downloads, Open Thread, and Upload & Submit. That's what nearly every job gives you.

A single Open button means that job carries the online editor and opens it in your browser. If you hit that, the rest of this page applies.

## If a job does open the editor

Everything you type lives in the browser until you save. The layout is a stack of entries — one speaker plus one block of text per entry — with the media player and toolbar pinned to the bottom of the window.

Along the toolbar: a media selector when the job has more than one recording, rewind and fast-forward (five seconds a click), a read-only timestamp of where you are in the recording, and a playback speed selector running from 0.2x to 5.0x. Find, Settings, a keyboard-shortcut reference, and an annotation button sit beside them. Settings holds one option — how far to rewind automatically when you pause, from zero to ten seconds, defaulting to one.

When the job has attachments, they sit behind the paperclip icon in the header. The info icon beside it opens the case record — court, reference, appeal details, judge, date of proceeding, participants with their speaker tags, the job notes, and the minutes and due date.

<Warning>
  Save and Submit are separate buttons, and Submit does not save first. Anything you've typed since your last save is not part of what gets submitted. Save before you submit, and save before you leave the page — unsaved work is discarded.
</Warning>

Submit asks you to confirm, then closes your step on the job. It won't let you through until every entry has both text and a speaker assigned; if the Confirm button stays disabled, that's why. If Submit returns an error instead, stop and raise it on the thread rather than retrying — the job needs staff to move it onto the normal upload path.

### Keyboard

| Action                    | Shortcut                  |
| ------------------------- | ------------------------- |
| Play and pause            | `Tab`                     |
| Rewind one second         | `Shift + Tab`             |
| Forward one second        | `Ctrl + L`                |
| New entry below           | `Enter`                   |
| Move between entries      | `Arrow Up` / `Arrow Down` |
| Delete an empty entry     | `Backspace`               |
| Cycle to the next speaker | `Ctrl + Enter`            |
| Open the speaker picker   | `Ctrl + Shift + Enter`    |
| Add an annotation         | `Alt + A`                 |

The arrow keys only jump to the next entry once your cursor is already at the start or end of the text you're in, so you can still move around inside a long block normally.

<Note>
  The editor's own shortcut list also shows `Ctrl + F` for Find. That one isn't wired up — use the Find button on the toolbar.
</Note>

## If you're stuck

If a job opens the editor and something doesn't work, don't fight it — raise it on the job's [thread](/team-adF2334soP/threads). Staff can move the job onto the normal upload path.
